Rally cars at the Radnor Hunt Concours

Rally cars will be a featured class at the 2013 Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance, near Philadelpia on September 8. One of the most interesting cars is the 1964 Porsche 356C that Steven Harris drove nearly 20,000 miles in the 2010 Peking to Paris Rally and the 2013 Great South American Challenge.

At the concours on Sunday morning while most car owners are putting a final shine on their vehicles, Steven’s tight schedule will find him motoring 240 miles down the highway from Upstate New York with an arrival time around 9 am. Check back here and on our Facebook page for updates.

1964 Porsche 356C – Steven Harris Owner

WEVO director Hayden Burvill at WEVO in San Carlos, California has just finished building the classic Porche 356 he and TwinSpark’s good friend Steven Harris will race in the Peking to Paris trans-Mongolia rally, which starts in China on September 10, 2010.

The Peking-Paris Rally lasts 37 days and takes the cars from China into the Khangai Mountains and Gobi Altai (as in Gobi desert) to Russia. Next comes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy and France: an expected total of 14,600kms.

It will come as no surprise to find that the 356 has been modified for P to P, though perhaps not as radically as one might have expected. Hayden’s WEVO blog features pictures and further details of the modifications, including the custom-made additional fuel tanks, and crack tested wheels and other components. Hayden’s piece also details how WEVO took a crescent of material out of the lower edge of the 356′s rear panel, to enhance departure angles and reduce the scoop-like rear end of the rounded little sports car.

A custom exhaust has been fabricated in regulation mild steel (so it can be bush welded if required) to exit high on the rear quarter panel for help in river crossings. It’s one of the only parts not manufactured by WEVO and, as with all self-respecting control freaks, Hayden is not sure that it’s up to the task. Time will tell how durable the bespoke exhaust system is, but Steven’s love of open pipes could be a good thing. “He may get his wish on this car,” predicts the Antipodean Porsche parts designer.
