Louisville Concours moves to Indiana in 2013
After four years at the historic Churchill Downs racetrack, the Lousiville Concours moves to another historic location, this time near the resort town of French Lick, Indiana. The 110-year-old West Baden Springs Hotel, according to the Concours website, is a “short 90-minute drive from Louisville.” The circular hotel was designed to rival the top European spas and still features a magnificent 200-foot diameter domed atrium.
The nearby French Lick Springs Hotel, dating to 1845, popularized this part of Southern Indiana as a tourist destination. People came because the sulfur-infused mineral water that flowed from local springs was thought to have medicinal and healing properties. Spas, other hotels, resort amenities and several golf courses were constructed and by the early 20th century, French Lick was a bustling travel destination.
Both large hotels have undergone substantial renovation in recent years and there is a new gambling casino in town. The arrival of the Louisville Concours d’Elegance in October is sure to bring additional prestige to the area.
